Articles in ‘White – medium to full bodied’:

Hahndorf Hill Winery Gruner Veltliner 2013

RRP: $28

ABV: 13%

Region: Adelaide Hills, SA

This is a great example from Adelaide Hills winery Hahndorf Hill of the extremely food-friendly white wine style, gruner veltliner – which they have termed ‘Gru’ for short. Layered and complex, there’s aromas of pears, pineapple and stone fruits such as nectarines – all backed up with a kick of spicy white pepper. There’s a lovely textural and ‘crunchy’ quality to this stylish sip.

The Little Mermaid Tiffin Tea: for mini sippers

By Katrina Holden

Considering that all events I attend for Sip Your Style are focussed around wines or spirits, it’s rare that I get a chance to take my own mini-sippers to anything.

So an afternoon at The Little Mermaid Tiffin Tea at The Langham Hotel made for a lovely way to spend the afternoon amidst stylish but kid-friendly surrounds.

Running throughout the September school holidays and timed to coincide with the release of The Little Mermaid on Blu Ray, the child-friendly high tea is fun for both the big and little sippers. While the kids were tucking in to starfish fairybread, clamshell cookies,  Little Mermaid pink lemonade and Sebastian macarons, I was served a glass of Laurent Perrier champagne, followed by a pot of tea and my very own tray of high tea specialities.

Served daily during the school holidays, all the kiddies receive a book copy of Disney’s The Little Mermaid to keep, and further The Langham donate 10 per cent of all revenue from The Little Mermaid Tiffin Tea to Dymocks Children’s Charities.

21 September – 6 October

10am -12 noon

The Langham Sydney

89-113 Kent Street, Sydney

To book, phone 02 8248 5220 or email

Cost: $30 per child

Mud House Pinot Gris 2012

RRP: $22

ABV: 13.5%

Region: South Island, New Zealand

Most of the fruit used here is from the Waipara Valley in New Zealand’s South Island. This is a beautifully layered wine that keeps on giving. It has spice, minerality, aromatics, pear flavours and fresh acidity. It’s mouth-coating with an enhanced texture thanks to time spent maturing on yeast lees. It’s rich but balanced and easy to sip.

Marchand & Burch Porongurup Chardonnay 2011

RRP: $73

ABV: 13%

Region: Great Southern, WA

The beautiful Art Nouveau style label seems fitting of what a work of ‘art’ is housed within this wine bottle. ‘Marchand & Burch’ is a collaboration of two friends, Pascal Marchand from France and Jeff Burch from Western Australia (founder and owner of Howard Park Wines). This wine comes from their ‘Australian Collection’ and uses fruit from a sub region of the Great Southern winemaking district in Western Australia. Hand-picking and fruit pressed as whole bunches in small French barrels indicate the attention to detail this wine has received by winemaker Janice McDonald. With inviting and complex aromas of roasted hazelnuts and citrus fruits, the wine is finely textured with very generous and clean flavours, subtle use of oak and long, long length. Not everyday drinking at this price, but well worth the splurge. – Katrina.

Church Road Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2010

RRP: $25.99

ABV: 13.5%

Region: Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand

Chardonnay is the most significant white wine variety in the New Zealand Hawke’s Bay wine region. This 2010 release marks the 21st release of this wine for Church Road, with winemaker Chris Scott declaring the style has undergone “a quiet revolution in the last few years”. This is a full-bodied and complex style with concentrated fruit and plenty of flavour. Ripe citrus nuances are mingled with nutty, toasty characters and a mineral edge, all coming together with good balance, depth and long memorable flavour. Lots of layers and interest here – a sip of substance! – Katrina.
